Remembering
Bee Payne-Stewart

One
of the great promoters of women in sports has crossed the finish
line with grace, dignity, and courage. On May 4, after being diagnosed
with lung cancer in January, Bee Payne-Stewart, 86, passed away.
The disease did not deter Bee’s interest in helping others.
Among her last acts of kindness was paying to install lights for
the SMS softball field and to train equine assisted therapy instructors
at Branderosa Ranch in Nixa.
Bee was a devoted member of WIN, outspoken on Title IX, and instrumental
in the rise of the Lady Bears basketball program. The mother of
the late pro golfer Payne Stewart, Bee often gave away treasured
memorabilia to raise money for the causes in which she believed.
She financed the Harmony House for the Family Violence Center,
helped Planned Parenthood, and was active in PFLAG.
Bee was the first woman to serve on the Springfield Park Board
and, as a young woman, she aspired to be president of the United
States.
Instead, family and motherhood intervened, and Bee became the
wife of Bill Stewart and mother of Susan, Payne, and Lora. She
channeled her ambition into helping others, and it was an energy
that never let up, even during her final days.
We will never know Bee’s full impact on our community, as
many of her deeds were done anonymously. We do know we will miss
having her fighting for what is right and just.
