WIN Meeting Minutes
October 7, 2005

The meeting was held prior to the Missouri State Volleyball match that WIN was sponsoring. We handed out flyers on WIN and received a volleyball signed by the team and coaches prior to the match. We cheered on the team and of course they won!! Linda Dollar interviewed WIN President, Reba Sims, on the radio at halftime about WIN, who we are and what we do.

Meeting Minutes:

Linda Dollar gave a report about the CODP and the up coming activities. We are 1 of 9 communities that have the Community Olympic Development Programs. Volleyball started out with a great start. Lori Endicott-Vandersnick is the coach and started out this year working on basic skills with the girls that participated. They will move into more game strategies next year. In Weightlifting, we had 5 girls that received gold medals at the AAU Nationals and 3 boys receiving bronze medals. What a great showing!! We are looking at hosting the 2007 Nationals and CODP will need some help from WIN.

Linda also reported that Jordan Valley will host a FREE Ice Hockey Clinic for athletes and coaches on October 20 th and 21 st. Olympic coaches and women players will be offering this clinic. What a wonderful opportunity for Springfield. Call Jordan Valley Ice Park for more information (866-7444).

Linda also reported that we might host the USA Volleyball team, either the women’s or men’s teams. She will let us know if we are selected.

Reba Sims reported that the WSGT was another success and that we had surpassed our expectations for BCFO by raising $28,500. We look forward to another great event.

Holly Hesse announced that the MSU Softball team will host another event for the BCFO the first weekend in March. They will have a 5 team tournament for all the D-1 teams in Missouri to raise the money. The schools will be competing to see which school can raise the most money. Get ready to help Missouri State with this tournament by raising the most money for BCFO and be there to cheer them on to victory on the field.

Reba reported that the “On Your Left” bike rides had not done very well this summer. We hope to get those going again. Several have said that they wanted to ride the Frisco Trail so if there are others that want to ride this Fall or next Spring, email Reba (rsims@sofnet.com) and we will try to set a date for the ride.

Holly reported that we will be hosting another Winstar Women’s High School Coaches Academy at Drury in July. We will be having a presentation at MOAHPERD convention at Lake of the Ozarks to promote this event. We need to get the word out to area coaches. Jeni Hopkins said she had a list of all the area basketball coaches that we could use.

Holly also reported that the new lights for the MSU softball field had been dedicated. Bee Payne Stewart had donated $90,000 for the project. Bee’s daughters, Laura and Susan were at the field for the dedication. The lights are a wonderful addition to the field and to the program. Thanks to Bee for her enduring support of women’s athletics.

Holly also reported that the softball team was raising money for a new locker room with new lockers. Reba and Linda are raising money for one locker in honor of the 1974 softball team and Coach Kay Hunter. If any of you would like to donate to this project, send checks to Reba at 560 Lakeview Dr. Ridegdale, MO 65739. Make the check out to Missouri State University Foundation and put softball locker on the note line.

Laura Scott has set up a horseback riding outing for WIN members and guests. The ride will be October 22 at 10:00 am at Branderosa Ranch. It will cost $20 to ride and the horses are gentle. Bring your lunch. We will picnic along the river. This ranch has riding for children with disabilities and a portion of our fee will go to help them continue this program. I hope you all can go. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A GOOD RIDER!!! Let me know if you want to ride and we will send you a map to the Ranch.

Cindy Deskin reported about plans for our first WIN for Springfield Annual Banquet. We are looking at a date the first part of May. We will hold the Banquet at the Clarion Hotel. If you are interested in helping with the planning of this banquet, please contact Cindy at c.deskin@mchsi.com.

Jeni Hopkins reported about the basketball luncheons, “Court Talk”, that will start this year beginning on November 15 th at 12:30 p.m. They will be held at Ryan’s Steakhouse at 1950 E. Kearney. All the city coaches are invited to attend as well as the area college coaches. Other coaches in the area are welcome to participate. The cost of the luncheon is $7, which includes everything. The luncheons will be held on every Tuesday throughout the season. The coaches will talk about their season and games. The community is invited to attend. It will give us an opportunity to learn more about the high schools games and can ask the coaches questions. Art Haines is the Media Host. The meetings usually last about an hour. Hope you can attend and support these luncheons.

The newsletter went out in July. Another newsletter will be coming out soon, so if you have any material to be included in the next newsletter, please get that information to Reba.

Reba reported that WIN had submitted a group of 10 women and women’s teams to the MO Sports Hall of Fame. We are also working on submitting more for next year. We have not heard anything yet but we are hopeful that some of our candidates will be chosen.

Other announcements:

Leslie Peck will continue to help WIN present All Ozark Conference certificates.

WIN had received an invitation to participate in the MSU homecoming parade but it was decided to look into it for next year.

Linda Maune reported that 2 young basketball officials were being noticed and were moving into the college level, Yen Quaq (sp) and Lauren Holcamp. Congratulations to these young ladies. Keep up the good work.

Linda also invited WIN to become involved with Strafford High School’s Cross Country meet the second Saturday in September. The proceeds go to BCFO. Linda will alert us next year for this event.

Drury is looking to host the D-II Sports Festival for the fall or spring sports. This will not occur for several years but we are beginning to work on this.

We had 13 members present and we also set a record for high school coaches at the meeting, with a total of 4. We hope that this will continue to improve. Invite all your high school coaching friends.

We have some really exciting events planned for Springfield so get ready to get busy!!!
