WIN MEETING MINUTES
November 20, 2004
We
had a good meeting at Drury and the following items were discussed.
Recap
on past events:
WSGT: WIN was instrumental in running the Pro Women’s Senior
Golf Tournament event, and we were successful in helping raise
$16,200 for the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. The BCFO
gave WIN a $1,000 to help us with our functions during the year.
We are meeting now to plan the event for next year, so start gathering
your auction items early so we can have a bigger and better tournament
again next year.
“On Your Left” Bike rides--- Melita Van Winkle reported
that we have held two bike rides and will have probably the last
one for ’04 on Saturday, November 27th on Galloway Trail,
beginning at Pershing Elementary School at 9:30 a.m., weather
permitting. Everyone has been having a great time. Come and join
us.
Drury Golf Team Scholarship for weight training. Lisa Tinkler
sent a Thank You for the scholarship that WIN provided to the
Drury Golf Team to workout at Doling weight training facility.
The team was very appreciative of the opportunity to use the Park’s
new facility.
A Night @ the Races with Rivendale—several WIN members volunteered
to assist with this program to benefit the Rivendale school.
Laura Scott wrote an article for 417 Magazine about five women
in Springfield that are extreme athletes. It was a wonderful article,
and we are very proud of Laura’s expertise in bringing attention
to these women athletes. She announced that she has been asked
to do more articles for 417 Magazine.
Reba Sims announced that she had written a letter to Mr. Hammons
informing him that WIN was in support of a Springfield Arena that
would seat at least 12,000 fans and, we would do what we could
to help him with this effort. She did not get a response but at
least the information was sent.
Upcoming events:
Reba announced efforts for WIN members to make a trip to a Michigan
WBB game on 2/6/05. If you are interested in going, let Reba know
and she will get motel reservations and game tickets. You need
to make your own flight reservations. The current cost on Northwest

Rental car about $20 each

NAGWS Day----Sophie Pierpoint announced that WIN could help with
NAGWS Day at SMS celebrating 100 years of women in sports on January
23, 2005. There will be activities on the East court for children
learning about the different sports SMS has for women. The children
can interact with the SMS coaches and players in these sports
and get to try some of the skills in each sport. We will also
have representatives of SMS women athletes from each decade 40’s,
50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and
00’s to visit with the children about what participating
in athletics has meant to them. These athletes will also be introduced
at half time and WIN members will be able to visit with these
athletes at a reception either at half time or immediately following
the game in the alumni lounge. This is a time for us to help bring
attention to women in sports and provide role models for young
players. If you need tickets to the game and support this event,
contact Reba or Sophie and we will try to get those tickets for
you.
Jodie Adams announced that we will host a Pro Softball Tournament
on July 1-3 where we will host 6 Pro teams and maybe 100 youth
teams for a softball extravaganza. This will be another very exciting
Pro event for Springfield. There will also be a clinic on Thursday
before the tournaments begin given by some of the pro players.
Linda Dollar reported on the Community Olympic Development Program.
We have weightlifting and tennis progressing nicely and will soon
have volleyball. The coaches in these programs are actively looking
for athletes that want to improve their skills in these sports
as well as providing clinics for coaches in the area to expand
their knowledge in these sport areas. Springfield will be hosting
a Weightlifting event on January 15th and we will need WIN members
to help with this event. If you can help, please respond to Reba
and we will get the assignments to you after the first of the
year.
We welcome two new sponsors who have signed up as WIN corporate
members:
Waddell and Reed Financial Advisors------Glenda Bond
Wild Horse Development------Stephanie Montgomery
WIN will sponsor All Ozarks Conference certificates for the first
and second team members. Cindy Deskin and Leslie Peck are working
on these for these very deserving women players. The Ozarks conference
does not currently provide any sort of recognition for these players.
Sylvia Lee has reported that we will have the next WIN newsletter
out in January. Those that need to get material for this newsletter,
please get the information to Reba so we can get this newsletter
out in a timely manner.
Suzette Crutcher got a sample of the new Purple WIN shirt and
cost. After looking at the shade of purple, the group decided
to change to a light blue for the new shirt. The WIN logo will
show up better on the lighter shirt. Suzette also had some examples
of pins that WIN could have made and the group voted to get a
WIN lapel pin. We will order both the new shirts and pins to be
available at the next meeting. The shirts will cost about $15
and the pins will cost about $3. Thanks Suzette for getting this
material for us.
Jodie announced that there is a new “Step Club” Program
the Parks is providing in the schools. The “Step Club”
Program encourages children to walk and emphasizes the benefits
of living actively, eating healthier and recognizing old habits,
like watching TV, may need to be restricted. Maria Johnston is
supervising this program and says there are over 300 participants
in just a few weeks the program has been running.
WIN for KC will have their annual banquet on February 4 at 11:30
a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center. Diane Nyad will be their
guest speaker. Diane is a world class athlete. For 10 years, she
was the greatest long distance swimmer in history, making the
102.5-mile journey from the island of Bimini to Florida. She was
inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and is a
member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame. The cost of
the banquet is $50 but well worth the cost to attend the banquet
and hear their speaker. They really have a nice recognition for
women athletes in the KC area. We are wanting to have a similar
banquet for Springfield and those of you that would like to see
what we are wanting to immolate will want to attend. We will provide
transportation to the event. We are also wanting WIN members that
want to work on such a banquet to contact Reba and we will have
a committee on this soon.
Cindy Deskin moved that the minutes for the last meeting be accepted
and Bee Payne Stewart seconded. The minutes from the September
1, 2004 meeting were approved.
Drury provided tickets for the tournament games after the meeting
for an Evangel game and Drury game. Sophie also had tickets for
the SMS volleyball game. Several members took advantage of both
of the game events.
Respectfully
Submitted,
Reba Sims
